The Garrone family has been cultivating specialty mushrooms in Moss Landing since the late 1980s, making Far West one of the longest-running gourmet mushroom operations on the West Coast. At Alemany, they bring a rotating selection of cultivated and foraged varieties — from everyday cremini to lion's mane, maitake, king trumpet, and reishi. The mushrooms are grown in controlled conditions without pesticides. The stall also stocks dried mushroom products and mushroom growing kits. Far West is one of the market vendors with a presence across multiple SF markets and a retail shop in the Ferry Building.

City Fish Company
Direct-sourced seafood · Bay Area
Allan, a retired fisherman, and his cousin Sean run this seafood stall at the far end of the market. They source directly from the fishing community, which means they can price below comparable markets while still selling quality fish. They are one of the only seafood vendors at Alemany. Dungeness crab in winter is the draw that brings people from across the city. Black cod and halibut run year-round. The fish arrive fresh and sell out early — this is not a stall for 1pm shoppers.
WHAT THEY BRING
🦀 Dungeness Crab (Nov–May) Black Cod (year-round) ☀ Halibut (Apr–Oct) Rock Cod Fish Heads for stock
Notes: Arrive early — sellout likely by 11am on busy weekends
Pricing: Competitive, below Ferry Plaza equivalents

Yerena Farms
Organic strawberries & berries · Watsonville, CA
CERTIFIED ORGANIC
The Yerena family has been growing organic strawberries and berries in Watsonville for over 40 years, and they have been selling at the Alemany market for roughly as long. Watsonville sits at the northern edge of the Pajaro Valley, one of the best strawberry-growing microclimates in the world — coastal fog keeps temperatures cool, and the sandy loam soils drain well. Yerena's certified organic berries are one of the most anticipated seasonal offerings at the market. Their presence at Alemany is one of the longest-standing vendor relationships at any SF market.
WHAT THEY BRING
☀ Strawberries (Mar–Nov) ☀ Raspberries (Jun–Sep) ☀ Blackberries (Jun–Sep)
Location: Watsonville, Santa Cruz County
Certifications: Certified Organic
History: At Alemany for ~40 years

Ferrari Farms
Organic apples, stone fruit & nuts · Central Valley
CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Ferrari Farms is a reliable year-round anchor at Alemany, best known for organic apples that span the entire apple season from early summer through winter. In summer they bring stone fruit — peaches, plums, cherries — plus almonds and walnuts in fall. Their position near the market entrance makes them an early stop for produce shoppers doing a complete weekly shop.

El Huarache Loco
Traditional Mexican street food · SF-based
Lorena Topete has operated El Huarache Loco at Alemany and the Ferry Plaza for years, serving traditional Oaxacan and Central Mexican street food. Huaraches are oval masa sandals topped with beans, salsa, and various proteins — a Mexico City street food that is difficult to find well-executed in the Bay Area. The line at El Huarache Loco on Saturday mornings is a reliable indicator of quality. Lorena won the CUESA Farmer-Chef Connection award and has been cited by SF Chronicle food writers as one of the best prepared food vendors at any SF farmers market.

ABOUT THIS MARKET

The Alemany Farmers Market opened on August 12, 1943 — during World War II — when the Victory Garden Council and regional farmers started it as a way to sell surplus produce that federal wartime restrictions would otherwise have wasted. It is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in California and the first of its kind in the state. It began at Duboce Avenue and Market Street and moved to its current Bernal Heights location in 1947.

Known affectionately as "The People's Market," Alemany draws up to 90 farms and food vendors and more than 3,000 shoppers every Saturday. Unlike the Ferry Plaza, the emphasis here is affordability and diversity — Asian vegetables like bitter melon, luffa squash, and Chinese mustard greens sit alongside heirloom tomatoes, boysenberries, and pomegranates. The market has historically been operated by the City and County of San Francisco; as of February 2026, Foodwise (which also runs the Ferry Plaza) took over operations. CalFresh EBT, Market Match, and WIC are all accepted.
