The Alemany Farmers Market opened on August 12, 1943 — during World War II — when the Victory Garden Council and regional farmers started it as a way to sell surplus produce that federal wartime restrictions would otherwise have wasted. It is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in California and the first of its kind in the state. It began at Duboce Avenue and Market Street and moved to its current Bernal Heights location in 1947.
Known affectionately as "The People's Market," Alemany draws up to 90 farms and food vendors and more than 3,000 shoppers every Saturday. Unlike the Ferry Plaza, the emphasis here is affordability and diversity — Asian vegetables like bitter melon, luffa squash, and Chinese mustard greens sit alongside heirloom tomatoes, boysenberries, and pomegranates. The market has historically been operated by the City and County of San Francisco; as of February 2026, Foodwise (which also runs the Ferry Plaza) took over operations. CalFresh EBT, Market Match, and WIC are all accepted.
